Client: Antarctic Polar Race

Project: Website design and build

Capturing and communicating Antarctic’s breathtaking elegance and drama!

In late 2023, we were commissioned to design and build the website for the 2024 Antarctic Polar Race to increase signups and help increase brand awareness for this incredible challenge!

In crafting the website for the Antarctic Polar Race, we delved deeply into understanding the founder and race director, Richard's, vision. Our aim was to communicate the professionalism, planning, remoteness, and drama associated with the challenge while ensuring a simple and easily navigable information structure for the site.

This process began with extensive discussions with Richard to grasp the core values, mission, and unique aspects of the Antarctic Polar Race. Our research extended to similar extreme sports events and expeditions to glean inspiration on effectively communicating professionalism, drama, and remoteness. We sought to evoke emotions through imagery and narratives drawn from Antarctic expeditions, capturing the awe-inspiring nature of the landscape.

The design of the website was crucial in conveying the drama and professionalism of the event. High-quality imagery and videos showcasing the vastness and challenges of the Antarctic landscape were prioritised, complemented by a sleek and professional aesthetic to reflect the serious planning involved in organising such an event.

Simplifying the site's structure was a priority to ensure ease of navigation. We meticulously organised the information architecture, making essential details about the race, registration, route, safety measures, and FAQs easily accessible. Intuitive navigation through clear labels, dropdown menus, and a prominent search function aimed to enhance usability.

Our focus extended beyond mere presentation; storytelling formed a significant part of our content strategy. We aimed to bring the drama, challenges, and triumphs of the race to life through compelling narratives, race footage, and interviews with Richard. Incorporating participant stories, historical accounts, and multimedia content enriched the site's depth and authenticity.

Considering the diverse locations from which the audience might access the site, mobile responsiveness and accessibility were paramount. We ensured the site's compatibility across various devices and internet speeds for a seamless user experience.

Engagement was fostered through interactive elements, including an interactive race route map, potential live participant tracking, and social media integration for real-time updates. Clear calls-to-action encouraged visitor engagement, prompting registration or newsletter sign-ups for ongoing race details and updates.

The site underwent rigorous testing across browsers, devices, and user scenarios to iron out any functional or usability issues. Continuous feedback from Richard and potential participants allowed for iterative improvements, ensuring the website effectively portrayed the essence of the Antarctic Polar Race while providing an intuitive, informative, and engaging platform.
